SUMMARY:Technician Immunization Training
DESCRIPTION:Program Overview: This training allows pharmacy technicians in the state of Arkansas to administer vaccines and immunizations if delegated to do so by a supervising pharmacist according to state regulations. Participants must successfully complete the online self-study component and the injection technique assessment (the injection technique assessment must be done under the supervision of a pharmacist who is certified to give immunizations once the online portion is completed). Please keep a copy of completed assessment forms in a folder in the pharmacy and email a copy to Marlene Battle. Target Audience: Pharmacy Technicians Learning Objectives: (Knowledge) Name the primary CDC-ACIP recommended vaccines that are available for a pharmacy technician to screen for a patient\, then administer according to the state practice model. Explain the benefits that a vaccine offers a patient\, along with the eligibility requirements and when administered to the patient. Discuss how to utilize CDC-ACIP immunization schedules for children and adults based on age\, disease state\, and occupation. Discuss best practices for a pharmacy technician to communicate with patients about vaccine safety concerns and address instances of vaccine hesitancy. Describe the role of Cold Chain Protocol to ensure appropriate storage requirements for vaccines\, both in the pharmacy and at off-site immunization clinics. Describe how to screen a patient for eligibility and accurately document vaccine administration. Learning Objectives: Demonstrate the proper technique for both vial-dispensing of the vaccine and the use of a pre-filled syringe with vaccine when preparing to vaccinate the patient. Demonstrate the proper injection technique to administer a vaccine for both intramuscular and subcutaneous injection. Demonstrate the proper disposal technique for sharps\, blood-borne vaccination supplies\, vaccine containers\, non-medical waste\, and PHI on consent forms.
